An Indigenous man who vanished while swimming in a Darwin creek has been found dead, sparking a police investigation.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was swimming at a beach near Rapid Creek last night and was seen by locals before he went missing.

Search and rescue officers along with NT emergency services searched for the man after he had gone missing from the waters.

Members of the public assisted officers in the search operation, and the body was found on Friday evening.

Police say investigations into the death are ongoing.

They have urged members of the public to contact police or Crime Stoppers with any information.
